Tips and Tricks for Making the Most of the Sundance Film Festival Experience
SUNDANCE: Every winter for over 30 years, Park City has rolled out the red carpet for an impressive menagerie of actors, directors, filmmakers, and film buffs during the Sundance Film Festival. And for the past 11 years as festival director (and 30 years total at Sundance), John Cooper has been tirelessly devoted to bringing independent film to the big screen. But after this year’s festival, he’ll step down from his current role. “I’m switching roles to emeritus director,” he says. “It’s a big job with a lot of small parts, so I’ll be around for a year to help make the transition for the new director as smooth as possible.”
Lucky for us, Cooper shared a few parting words for making your festival experience the best possible—whether you’re a veteran Sundance attendee or a newbie.
For starters, there is no “right” way to do Sundance. “Come in as open-minded as possible,” he says. “Try a lot of new things and take risks with the films you see.” The flicks are made by artists telling a personal story. Not all stories are pretty, but they should move you in some way—whether you laugh or cry. “Push your mental capacity and be a daring adventurer in your search for experiences,” he says.
Look for unexpected films at Sundance that excite you, not just the big films getting a lot of buzz. Plan to get out of your comfort zone and release any preconceived notions of what is good or bad. Mix it up. If you see 30 documentaries, you might be hungry for a comedy—so plan to see as many categories as possible. “When I go to a festival, I like to see big and small films, new and old,” he says. “It keeps thing intense and interesting.”
Make sure you leave time for the New Frontier program—an innovative program that pushes the boundaries of storytelling. This curated collection of experimental media works is defying artistic boundaries with virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and artificial intelligence (AI). “New Frontier is the intersection of technology and art. These artists are pushing the limits of technology to tell stories in a completely fascinating new way,” he says. “They can take you places you’ve never been before and manipulate your environment with a headset.”
You’ll also want to catch the World Cinema program, which showcases international films. This program has been building relationships in the global industry to get the best films from other regions. “Don’t be afraid of subtitles,” he says. “You might miss an unusual world view.”
It’s easy to want to see every film and go to every event at Sundance, but you might wear yourself out if you try to do it all. Think of it as an endurance race and pace yourself. “If it’s past midnight and you’re at a party and not having the best time of your life, go home and get some rest,” he says. Eat regularly. “My favorite snack is bacon,” he says. Take snacks and nibble while you’re waiting in line. Finally, take time to enjoy the natural environment. “I love a good snowstorm in the middle of the festival,” he smiles. “It forces everyone to slow down, get out of the fray, and maybe even look down on Main Street.”
What to wear to Sundance? Leave the ball gowns at home. Park City is a mountain town. It’s probably going to snow, the streets may be a mess, and it’s going to be very cold. Dress for the weather. “Being prepared is the fashion statement,” he says. “Take a bag with a water bottle and food. Wear the right shoes. Be comfortable.”
Finally, enjoy the communal party vibe. Whether or not you get invited to a party, talk to people in lines, on the shuttles, or at the bars. “Everyone likes to talk about the films,” he says. “Strike up a conversation and see where it goes.”

BUYING A HOME?- Millennials, expect a slew of housewarming party invites to start rolling in. And don’t be surprised when your own itch to buy a place intensifies in 2020. Fortune tellers we are not. But we did check in with real estate experts and analysts, and the general consensus is that millennials will be dominating the home-buying market, thus shaping many 2020 trends.
Here’s why: In 2020, millennials will be reaching some key life milestones. Nearly five million millennials will be turning 30, which is a time when many people start getting serious about buying a home, according to an analysis from Realtor.com. But then the oldest members of this generation—let’s call ’em the elder millennials—will be approaching 39, which is a time when people start looking to move from the city to the ‘burbs in search of more family-friendly amenities (i.e. trading a condo close to the best happy hour spots for a backyard equipped with a swing set). Collectively, millennials will account for more than 50 percent of all mortgages by the spring, according to Realtor.com.
So, here’s looking at you millennial buyers. These six home buying trends are expected to come into play in 2020.
Inventory Will Be Low
Inventory shortages, which have been plaguing buyers since 2015, will continue in 2020 and could even reach historic lows, predicts Realtor.com. This is especially true in the entry-level category, which poses a tough hurdle for first-time buyers. Inventory is low partly because Boomers and Gen-Xers are staying in their homes longer, or buying second homes instead of selling their first, explains Philadelphia-based realtor Jim Armstrong. If Gen-X buyers look to upgrade, it could free up some of those hard-to-come-by entry-level homes. In addition to low inventory, first-time buyers are also competing against investors who can make all-cash offers, as well as older buyers who are putting more money down, points out Ohio-based Realtor Michelle Sloan.
We’ll Want Our Homes to Be Smaller
America, we’re downsizing. Sprawling suburban homes are becoming dinosaurs, an ongoing trend that Zillow has zoomed in on and predicts will continue into 2020. The median square footage of newly built, single-family homes has been decreasing over the past five years. In fact, the typical U.S. home has shrunk in size by more than 80 square feet since 2015, according to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau. Millennials prefer homes in urban areas, with restaurants and parks and other amenities within walking distance—not mansions in the suburbs.
“Urban homes close to work are going to continue to increase in demand as millennials typically prioritize shorter commute times over larger homes and yards,” says Nicholas Henton, an associate at RE/MAX Professionals in Stillwater, Minn.
The Market Will Be More Colorful
Expect some bold pops of color in the open houses you tour in 2020. Though we’ve really been flirting with this trend (think: color-saturated front doors) for years, Zillow predicts color is staging a mighty comeback after almost a decade of minimalism, neutrals, and subdued Scandinavian modern designs. Look for color in lighting fixtures, on interior doors, moldings, kitchen cabinetry, and appliances.
You Might Be Able to Come in with a Low Down Payment
“Due to the strong demand, lenders have continued to roll out loan options for well-qualified buyers,” says Jason Kraus, broker at RE/MAX Advanced Realty in Indianapolis. You probably already know you don’t need to put down 20 percent (though, it can help you avoid Private Mortgage Insurance, or PMI). But, Kraus says, lenders have continued to provide low-down payment options, including 3 percent and 1 percent down on conventional loan options. That’s even lower than the 3.5 percent down you’d need to scrape together for an FHA loan.
“I expect this trend to continue as lenders look to bring more millennial buyers into the housing market,” he says.
Mortgage Rates Will Remain Low
Interest rates fell in 2019 and are expected to remain low for most of 2020, experts predict, including those at Zillow. While that’s generally a great thing for buyers, it will keep demand strong, which could mean more price growth in the parts of the country where homes tend to be more affordable. So, this is a good news-bad news situation.
“Mortgage rates are expected to remain low but with such low inventory, prices are expected to be strong and continue to increase,” says Mike Zschunke, a realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Homes in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Buyers Will Look for Move-In Ready Properties
Because the starter home inventory has been so low, many first-time buyers have been willing to take on some pretty hefty “Fixer Upper”-style projects so that they can break into the real estate market. But buyers in 2020 will be less willing to do those bigger makeovers.
“Simply put, today’s first-time buyers are busy and unable to take on a renovation project prior to moving in,” says Barbara Ireland, a real estate agent from DJK Residential in New York, New York.

Go winter fly-fishing. If solitude and peaceful trout-catching sounds like a dream, a winter fly-fishing trip may just be your perfect activity. Choose your own adventure at the Utah Olympic Park. The pair of free museums dedicated to skiing and the 2002 Winter Games would be enough to warrant a stop the UOP, but the facility’s extreme adventure options make it a must-visit. Spend an afternoon zooming down an extreme zipline at 50 mph ($30), test your balance and agility on the Winter Canyon Course ($22), free-fall from the 65-foot Tower ($22), or jump in a bobsled for the ultimate white-knuckle ride ($195). Climb up a frozen waterfall. No experience is necessary to learn how to climb Provo Canyon’s frozen Stairway to Heaven waterfall. Ride snowy trails on two wheels. Some of Park City’s world-class mountain bike trails turn into fat-tire-friendly spots in the winter, and even the Rail Trail is regularly groomed for winter activities. Rent a bike from Contender, Jans, White Pine Touring, or Storm Cycles. Check the Mountain Trails Foundation winter map to get an idea of where to go. Go tubing under the stars. Soar down the 1,200-foot-long tubing lanes at Soldier Hollow, where nighttime sessions have the added fun-bonus of lights and music. Adult tickets for a two-hour session range from $20–$28. Learn how to curl. If you’ve seen curling during the Olympics and thought, “I bet I could do that”—here’s your opportunity to try in person. The Park City Curling Club offers Learn to Curl Nights ($20) at the Park City Ice Arena, or you can take a two-hour on-ice class ($16) at the Utah Olympic Oval to learn the proper delivery, sweeping, and strategy of this non-traditional sport.
