Utah #2 Fastest Rates of Job Growth




10 States With the Fastest Rates of Job Growth, 2020


U.S. job growth in 2019 is likely to average 170,000 jobs per month, down from 223,000 in 2018. The decline is partly attributable to fewer available workers to hire with the low unemployment rate. Also, businesses are reluctant to aggressively pursue growth, given increasing economic uncertainty from the trade war with China.
Hiring in some sectors –-particularly health care-– remains robust. Services associated with a growing economy, such as computers, restaurants, and temporary help, are also up.
The weak spots? Retail is shedding workers as stores continue to close. The telecom sector also continues its long decline. The drop in oil prices has led to job cuts in the oil and gas sector.

As a result, some states buoyed by thriving industries are adding jobs at much faster clips than others. Every year, The Kiplinger Letter forecasts economic growth in all 50 states (plus the District of Columbia). Check out the 10 states with the fastest projected rates of job growth for 2020.

2019 job growth: 3.0% (42,400 new jobs)
2020 job growth: 2.0% (29,200 new jobs)

Full speed ahead for Nevada's thriving economy, gaining momentum in the south from a continuing Las Vegas construction boom. East of Reno, electric-car maker Tesla and partner Panasonic are building out a multi-billion-dollar plant called the Gigafactory that makes batteries and parts for Tesla's Model 3. It currently has 10,000 employees, but plans for further expansion may depend on the success of the Model 3.

Nevada is a standout regionally and nationally with payrolls set to grow 3.0% this year. Hiring for construction is soaring, so much so that employers are having trouble finding skilled workers they need with some $23 billion worth of projects under way in Las Vegas alone. Work is just starting on a $1 billion Circa Resort and Casino in the downtown area while Malaysia-based Genting group is building its $4 billion Resorts World Las Vegas that will add 7,000 hotel rooms. It's emerging as a major sports center with a successful professional hockey team, while a $2 billion football stadium is under construction that will be the future home of the Las Vegas Raiders from the start of the 2020 NFL season onward.

A healthy national economy is a boon for the gaming industry and for tourism in Las Vegas, with free-spending visitors fueling about 30% of the local economy. So far, visitor volume is 2% above last year. Housing markets in Las Vegas and Reno are healthy, partly because the state's desert climate and low taxation rates make it an attractive destination for retirees, including many fleeing nearby high-tax states like California. A surge in home building is beginning to ease the supply crunch a little, and double-digit housing price growth for over a year has slipped back into the single digits again.

Utah's economy is humming, consistently one of the best-performing in the country with expansion continuing in every major sector from healthcare to basic manufacturing. Hiring will expand by 3.0% this year, down slightly from last year's sizzling 3.2% growth. Slower workforce growth may be a helpful development with unemployment at a low 2.8% rate that underlines the scarcity of workers to fill jobs.
Utah has a large presence in a number of rapidly growing high-tech sectors including cloud computing and software development as well as in aerospace and life sciences. Its relatively cheaper real estate, growing talent pool and proximity to other higher-cost Western tech centers is fostering growth of a "Silicon Slopes" cloud computing and "Bionic Valley" bioengineering center around Salt Lake City. As many as one in every seven jobs in the state –-300,000 in all-– are generated by high-tech companies that typically pay more than other industries.

A variety of other businesses are drawn to Utah, too, including Amazon which has just put a new warehousing facility employing 1,500 employees and thousands of robots to work around the clock. Hiring is brisk in its tourism sector, while construction trades are booming with projects including a new $3.6 billion international airport at Salt Lake City. The airport is slated for completion in September 2020 and will offer visitors a gateway to Utah's ski resorts and national parks.
Hemmed in by the lake and the mountains, Salt Lake City's growth has slowed to about 2%. But growth is still strong along the valley to the north (Ogden, 3.8%) and to the south (Provo-Orem, 3.5%). And Utah boasts, in St. George along the southern border, the fastest-growing metro (4.5%) in the entire country.

SALT LAKE CITY — Long gone are the hot days of summer as the chill of autumn has slowly but surely crept up. Like leaves changing colors with the season, new events are here to match the cool and crisp weather.
Check out what’s happening in your neighborhood this October.


Northern Utah

Oct. 11 & 12: Magical Market
Based on the popular book and movie franchise series, “Harry Potter,” the 4th annual Magical Market is catered to every witch and wizard’s needs. They will have wand building, potion making, Harry Potter trivia and cosplay contests. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to CAPSA, a recovery center for individuals who have or are facing domestic violence and abuse. The event will take place at the Riverwoods Conference Center, 615 Riverwood Parkway in Logan, on Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Children 5 and under get in free and tickets are available online at $7 per person.
Partnering with the city of Ogden and Brewvies, the second annual Ogden Latino Film Festival will have a variety of different films to show for audiences who attend this event. Donations in the form of personal hygienic items will be accepted and sent to immigrants who are seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. This free event will be at the Ogden Brewvies, 2293 Grant Avenue, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and seating is limited to a first-come, first-serve basis.
Oct. 17-28: Flashlight Adventure Night
Ogden's George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park will be decked out in Halloween decor and thousands of lights for the upcoming Halloween holiday. Guests can enjoy looking for dinosaur fossils and scavenging in the dark of the night. Flashlights are required to participate in activities. The event will be on Monday, Oct. 21 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 1544 E. Park Boulevard in Ogden. Tickets are $5 for children ages 2 to 12 and $3 for seniors and adults.


Salt Lake City area

All month: Wheeler Farm Pumpkin Days
This family-friendly, month-long event allows people of all ages to engage in fall fun without the scares that come with Halloween. There are wagon rides, hay mazes, a cow train and a pumpkin patch available for picking. Admission is $10; children under the age of 2 get in free with an adult. Located at Wheeler Farm, 6351 S. 900 East in Murray, Pumpkin Days open Mondays to Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Oct. 12: Utah Folklore Festival
This cultural event will have live performances of dance groups and teams from across the western United States showcasing dances from various Latin American countries including Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Chile and more. The Utah Folklore Festival will take place at Murray High School, 5440 S. State Street, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person and available online.
Oct. 14: 3rd Annual Indigenous Dinner
The 3rd Annual Indigenous Dinner offers a taste of traditional indigenous culture and foods while celebrating the eight native tribes in Utah for Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The dinner will be hosted by the Utah Dine Bikeyah with indigenous chefs and food activists such as M. Karlos Baca and Josh Nez. The event is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center, 1355 W. 3100 South in West Valley. Tickets can be purchased online and cost $100 per person or $750 for an eight-person table.
Oct. 17-19 & 24-26: Garden After Dark — Trouble in Oz
Based on the classic movie "The Wizard of Oz," guests can follow down the yellow brick road and find out how to stop the wicked witch from her dastardly plans. Photo booths, corn mazes and carnival games are just a few of the many activities to be enjoyed at this event. The Garden after Dark event is located at Red Butte Garden, 300 Wakara Way in Salt Lake City, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from the 17 to the 26. Tickets are $14; children 2 and under are free.
Oct. 23: Baby Shark Live!
The popularized song has now gone on tour! Kids and parents can enjoy Baby Shark and his friends singing and dancing along to songs both old and new to learn about colors, shapes and numbers. The performance is scheduled at the Eccles Theater, 131 Main St. in Salt Lake City, at 6 p.m. Tickets and meet-and-greet passes start at $21.50 and are available for purchase online or in person at the theater.


Central Utah

All month: Wilderson Farm Fall Fair
Attendees can enjoy fall festivities at Wilkerson Farm at 710 W. 2000 South in Orem. There’s a pumpkin patch, tractor rides, apple slinging and a 5-acre corn maze to be enjoyed by all. The fair is open every day, excluding Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., until Nov. 2. Admission is $9.50 for attendees age 5 and older.
Oct. 11 & 12: Full Moon Lift Rides
Families and couples can enjoy riding up the side of the mountain via Ray’s lift at Sundance Mountain Resort under the moonlight. Warm clothing is recommended for people who go on the 45-minute to an hour ride, as the weather can get chilly after the sun sets. The rides will be at 8841 N. Alpine Loop Road in Sundance. Tickets will be valid between 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. and are between $17 and $64, with the option for an upgrade to zipline back down for $59.
Oct. 18 - Nov. 4: Wait Until Dark
A thriller based on Frederick Knott’s 1966 Broadway original, this story follows Susan Hendrix, a newly blinded woman who is held captive in her apartment. Susan finds out her blindness can help her escape her captors, yet must wait until nightfall to enact her plan. The performance will be at the Keith Christeson Little Theater, 30 E. Center St. in Pleasant Grove. Evening shows are every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday matinees at 3 p.m., from Oct. 18 to Nov. 4. Tickets are between $13 and $15.
Oct. 26: Día de Los Muertos
Learn about the mystical Latin American holiday dedicated to celebrating and remembering the dead. This event will include folkloric dances, mariachi, sugar skull painting activities and many more. The event starts at 11 a.m. at Thanksgiving Point, 3003 N. Thanksgiving Way in Lehi. Tickets are between $2 and $8; children age 2 and under are free.


Southern Utah

Weekends: Harvest Fest
Take a stroll through a pumpkin patch and relax on a hayride while sipping hot cocoa. The Harvest Fest has varying farm tours and visiting hours. It will take place at Nature Hills Farm, 4326 N. 2100 East in Cedar City. The festival will run on Fridays and Saturdays, as well as a Monday, starting on Oct. 4 until Oct. 21. Tickets are $3.
Oct. 18 & 19: Chef Hog’s Oktoberfest
Dedicated to the German folk fest held every year, Chef Hog’s 2nd annual Oktoberfest will have beer, wine and traditional German food. Families are encouraged to come as there will be live music, a mechanical bull, dance performances and face painting. The event goes from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Chef Hog’s Oyster Bar & Grill, 4210 Bluegrass Way in St. George. Single-day tickets are priced at $10, and 2-day passes are $15.

5 Tips for Prepping a Lawn for the Winter


 
PREPPING THE LAWN FOR WINTER- How homeowners treat a yard and lawn this autumn can determine the quality of their yard next spring and summer. Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, offers up the following checklist for homeowners who want to lay a strong groundwork for a great lawn and yard next spring:
Keep mowing. Grass still needs regular care to stay healthy. Grass that is too high may attract lawn-damaging field mice. Shorter grass is more resistant to diseases and traps fewer falling leaves. Cutting the grass low also allows more sun to reach the crown of the grass. However, cutting off too much at one time can be damaging, so never trim more than a third of the grass blades off in a single cutting, Kiser says. Put mower blades on the lowest settings for the last two cuts of the season.
Aerate your lawn. Compressed soil can hurt the health of the grass. Aerating punches holes in the soil and lets oxygen, water, and nutrients into a lawn. Use a walk-behind aerator or get an attachment to pull behind a riding mower, Kiser suggests.
Mulch your leaves. Many mowers can mulch leaves with an attachment. Since mulching with a mower can mix grass clippings with leaf particles, these nitrogen-rich grass particles and carbon-rich leaf particles will compost more quickly. They can then return nutrients to the soil.
Trim and shore up trees and bushes. Use trimmers, chainsaws, or pole pruners to cut back trees, shrubs, and plants. Make sure branches are safely trimmed back from overhead lines and not in danger of falling on a home or structure in winter weather. You may need to tie or brace limbs of upright evergreens or plants to prevent them from breaking in high winds or snow. Call a professional arborist for big trees or hard-to-reach spots.
Repair bald spots in the lawn. Fall is a great time to patch bald or thin spots in a lawn. The easiest way to do this is with an all-in-one lawn repair mixture (found at most garden shops and home centers), Kiser says. Use a garden rake or dethatcher to scratch loose the soil on the spot.
