Memorial Day- It's easy to forget, but Memorial Day weekend is much more than an extra day off work to spend hosting a backyard barbecue or taking a day trip with the family. The holiday, which is observed on the last Monday of May every year, falls on May 27, 2019. Although you probably know the special day honors those who lost their lives serving in the U.S. military, you might be unaware of the origins behind the day of remembrance. Here are nine fascinating facts about Memorial Day.

1. Memorial Day celebrations might have started in ancient times.
Way back in 431 B.C., soldiers killed in the Peloponnesian War were honored with a public funeral and speech given by Greek statesman Pericles, according to History.com. This is thought to be the first communal ceremony of recognizing those who had given their life in war. Year after year, ancient Greeks and Romans hosted similar commemorations.

2. One of the first Memorial Day celebrations in the United States was by newly freed slaves on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina.
Not long after the Civil War ended, about 1,000 freed slaves, members of the U.S. Colored Troops, and some locals organized a ceremony to bury Union troops who died due to horrendous conditions of a prison created at what was once a racetrack, History.com reports. They honored the dead by singing hymns and placing flowers on their graves. An archway over the cemetery was engraved with the words "Martyrs of the Race Course," according to The New York Times.

3. The observance was originally known as Decoration Day.
By the late 1860s, many Americans had begun hosting tributes to the war's fallen soldiers by decorating their graves and with flowers and flags. It gradually came to be known as Memorial Day over the years.

4. It was Union General John A. Logan who called for an official nationwide day of remembrance on May 30, 1868, a date chosen because it wasn't the anniversary of a particular battle.
Meant to honor those lost in the Civil War, the southern states originally observed a different day to honor the Confederate soldiers who died. In the aftermath of World War I, the holiday evolved to commemorate fallen military personnel in all wars. Currently, 11 states still set an official day to honor those who lost their lives fighting for the Confederacy—Virginia is the only one that observes Confederate Memorial Day on the same day as Memorial Day.

5. In 1950, Congress passed a resolution requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace.
In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May, in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. But Memorial Day didn't actually become an official federal holiday until 1971.

6. In 1966, Waterloo, New York was officially declared the originator of Memorial Day.
Many places in the U.S. claim to be the first to celebrate Memorial Day, but there's only one small town officially identified as the birthplace. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed legislation stating that Waterloo, New York, is the originator of Memorial Day in the U.S. The town first observed a day to remember fallen soldiers on May 5, 1866.

7. President Bill Clinton signed the National Moment of Remembrance Act in 2000, which asks Americans to pause and observe a National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m. local time.
A number of organizations throughout the country observe this moment, including Amtrak (whose trains blast their whistles), Major League Baseball, and NASCAR.

8. Cities across the country host Memorial Day parades, but some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York, and, of course, Washington D.C.
In D.C., the National Memorial Day Parade hosts an audience exceeding 250,000, who watches as marching bands, active duty and retired military units, youth groups, veterans, and floats head down Constitution Avenue.

9. The President requests that all governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico direct the flag to be flown at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day on all buildings, grounds, and naval vessels.
U.S. citizens are asked to display the flag at half-staff from their homes before noon, as well.

Eagle Mountain to bring Tyson Food Plant in 2021

Tyson Foods food production plant coming to Eagle Mountain in 2021

Officials announced one of the world’s largest food companies is coming to Eagle Mountain and creating at least 800 new jobs by building a food production plant.

Tyson Foods, Inc. plans to invest nearly $300 million to construct Tyson Fresh Meats beef and pork production plant, according to a press release from Eagle Mountain officials.

The facility will become a meat-cutting and packaging operation that takes fresh beef and pork shipped from outside the state and creates steaks, chops, roasts and ground beef. The meats will then be weighed, labeled and shipped to retailers at grocery store meat cases.

The project, formally known as “Project Mockingbird,” will receive up to $12.3 million in tax cuts from the Alpine School District. The Alpine School District Board of Education voted on the tax cut Tuesday.

“We welcome Tyson Fresh Meats to Eagle Mountain,” said Mayor Tom Westmoreland in the press release. “This facility will provide jobs for our community, allowing people to work closer to home. It will also bring needed infrastructure, especially roads that will provide better east/west connection to the Cedar Valley. Tyson Foods is the second Fortune 100 company to invest in our city and we look forward to a great community partnership.”
The facility could open as soon as 2021 and will be located in the Pole Canyon development area near southwest Eagle Mountain.

Tyson Foods also operates similar plants in Iowa, Tennessee and Texas, where hourly employees make around $14.40 to $16.50 per hour along with health care benefits and 401(k).

Other positions start at $20 per hour and annual local payroll is projected at $44 million, the release stated.
The Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development announced the project would be locating to Utah and add an estimated $27 million in new state tax revenue during the next 10 years.

The project is anticipated to have more than a $1 billion economic impact due to the construction of the building, salaries, taxable sales and other investments.

The facility may also earn up to 20 percent of new state taxes that will be paid over the 10-year agreement post-performance Economic Development Finance tax credit rebate.

Eagle Mountain city and Alpine School District leaders approved a Community Reinvestment Project Area for the company, and the remaining taxing entities will be considered for approval at upcoming meetings, according to the press release.

“We’re grateful for the invitation to come to Eagle Mountain and Utah County,” said Nate Hodne, senior vice president and general manager of case ready meats for Tyson Fresh Meats. “We’ve built some great relationships during the initial phases of this process, and we appreciate the strong support we’ve received from local leadership. Our team is excited to find upcoming opportunities to meet the people of Eagle Mountain and become a part of this vibrant community.”

Utah ranks high for Entrepreneurism and Job Enjoyment, reports say

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH — For those people with an entrepreneurial spirit, Utah's capital city is one of the best places in the country to try your luck at being your own boss, new reports say.
A report by FitSmallBusiness.com ranked Salt Lake City, Utah No. 6 among the top 10 cities for entrepreneurs in 2019. The study looked at business survival rate, economic growth rate, new business growth, the local financial landscape, area tax climate, the labor market, quality of life and cost of living, explained special project editor Jeff Steen.

"There are a lot of factors, but at the ground level it's about opportunity," he said. "Part of that is an existing infrastructure that supports startup culture."

He said in the top-ranked cities, accessibility to investment capital is better than in many other locales compared to the overall population and startup density in those markets.
"Based on those factors, is it possible for startups to secure the funding they need to get off the ground?" he said. "Additionally, the best cities are places that offer resources to entrepreneurs that help them in their quest to get their companies up and running, including mentorship."

He also said the top cities had tax climates that were not impediments for budding businesses to establish themselves. The day-to-day expense of being a resident and business owner in a particular location was also a key measurement of a city's ranking, he added.

"As a new entrepreneur, you're going to be investing all of your spare cash and money into this business to ensure it survives, then you're going to want things like a low cost of living," Steen said. "In those instances, those individuals who are really committed to entrepreneurship will consider moving to a new city. The cities on our list, for the most part, have a lower cost of living and higher average salaries."

He said larger coastal cities, which are supposed to be launching pads for budding entrepreneurs, are often too costly to get a new business going from the ground up. For a city like Salt Lake, social opportunity, transportation and quality of life, along with other attributes, help to increase its standing among many places throughout the country that it competes with, he said.

"These are cities with smaller populations that aren't saturated with these kinds of (startup) businesses yet, and yet they have enough infrastructure and foundation for some of these businesses to get off the ground," he said. Noting the Wasatch Front's reputation for technology and life sciences, he said Salt Lake City compares favorably with larger metros like Seattle because of its higher per capita availability of resources — financial and otherwise — along with a pace of life that is alluring to many in the business community.

"The quality of life and cost of living are very attractive to people who are sick and tired of coastal rates and costs," Steen said. "Those people who would have turned away from a tech or startup mecca on the coast are now looking to places like Salt Lake City, Utah that are relatively (proximate)."
"It's not a huge jump to get to coastal places from Salt Lake City, Utah, but at the same time it's far enough away to have its own culture, its own dynamic and the landscape is really good for starting a new business," he added.

The Beehive State also made the top 10 in a couple of other nationwide studies, with one a bit more dubious than the other.

Best Cities For Entrepreneurs

According to data from Twitter, Utah ranked No. 2 for states that love their job and also ranked No. 6 for states that hate their job. The information was compiled by online career adviser Cultivated Culture.
The rankings are based on a month of geotagged Twitter data, explained spokesman Ryan Taylor. The takeaway is there were over 30,000 tweets of people talking about loving their job versus just over 11,000 users tweeting about hating their job, he said.

Meanwhile, as the state recognized Small Business Week, Rep. John Curtis, R-Utah, commended the hard work, creativity and passion of small-business owners in his district as well as statewide.
In a statement, he said data indicates small businesses are at the forefront of economic growth in Utah.
"Small businesses added 24,549 net new jobs during the last year studied. There are 287,803 small businesses in Utah and they employ 46.2 percent of the states private workforce," he said. "We celebrate all that you do to build our communities stronger and more vibrant!"
