Come Thrive In The Silicon Slopes

A few years ago, a developer from Silicon Valley reached out and asked if I was hiring. When I asked why, he explained that he was sick of the commute, the stress, and the culture of over-working. He wanted to get out of California. He had seen Utah, and he loved it. I offered him a job, and he’s still with my company five years later.

His story isn’t uncommon. When I graduated from college, HP offered me a great job in Palo Alto. But once I factored in the cost of living and having to give up Utah’s great outdoors, it didn’t seem worth it. Many people are convinced Silicon Valley is the only place to get ahead in tech, so they suffer through the long commutes, crowded cities and monthly rent that costs more than my first car. In reality, Utah offers similar career opportunities in tech but a better work-life balance.

You might be asking yourself: Since when is Utah a tech hub? Do they even have internet access? Isn’t that where the Mormons live?

Utah is actually an economic powerhouse. We had the strongest job growth in the country last year, and have been ranked as a Forbes top state for business five times in the last 10 years. People are moving here in record numbers, and they’re moving to stay. Almost 114,000 new people moved to Utah in 2018, and analysts are confident that population and economic growth are not slowing down in 2019. It’s a win-win for companies looking to recruit and for employees looking for great jobs.

Utah’s growing tech scene is a huge reason for this economic strength. A Cushman & Wakefield report found that two of the top 25 tech-centric cities in North America were in Utah. Salt Lake City and Provo actually grew faster than more commonly-known, up-and-coming tech hubs like Austin and Washington D.C. In fact, many promising start-ups are based here, such as Airin.ai, which helps companies build private AI expert systems, and Ancestry.com, creators of the popular AncestryDNA test. Additionally, California-born giants like Facebook, Adobe, and Google have all committed to building infrastructure in Utah.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that Utah has massive property and sales tax incentives designed to attract data centers, multiple excellent colleges filled with tech-savvy entrepreneurs, and several of the IRS’s Opportunity Zones—geographically-tied tax break zones designed to lure investors (the same designation Amazon planned for its now-canceled New York City HQ2 campus).

All of those perks are great for an up and coming company, but what truly allows start-ups in Utah to thrive is the people. Hiring the right employees is everything to a growing business, and Utah offers a highly educated, technically skilled workforce with an appetite for entrepreneurial ventures. Beyond being highly qualified, Utah’s businesses and employees both tend to place real value on a healthy work-life balance. From an HR perspective, this translates to more productive, happier employees who are less prone to burnout. Remember the developer I mentioned earlier who wanted a better work-life balance? He’s not the only developer I’ve hired who moved to Utah for the work-life balance. Utah’s talent pool keeps growing, thanks in part to smart, capable, out-of-state talent drawn to the great jobs that can be had alongside a great standard of living.

One of the big draws for both recruiting and retention is Utah’s great outdoors. The entire state is picturesque, graced with gorgeous mountains, lakes, and rivers. In under 30 minutes, I can leave work and be climbing at a crag, skiing, mountain biking, or waterskiing. Does any other tech hub offer such quick access to so much adventure?

Here in the Silicon Slopes, we’re building a tech hub where work and life can truly be balanced, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Rocky Mountains and the Great Salt Lake. Utah Business- Acording to WalletHub, the personal finance site analyzed data from a variety of sources — including the U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics, the U.S. Census Bureau — and found that the top five states to start a business were Texas, Utah, Georgia, Montana, and Oklahoma. The bottom five were Pennsylvania, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Hawaii. Texas is the best state to start your own business and Hawaii is the worst.

The personal finance site analyzed data from a variety of sources — including the U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics, the U.S. Census Bureau — and found that the top five states to start a business were Texas, Utah, Georgia, Montana, and Oklahoma. The bottom five were Pennsylvania, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Hawaii.

The study factored in the business environment, access to resources, and business costs as part of their findings. It also considered aspects including educated populations, total spending incentives as a percentage of GDP, and the availability of human capital.

North Dakota (#7) and Utah (#2) are the top states for highest average growth in the number of small businesses and most accessible financing. Alaska (#36) is the top state for the highest availability of human capital and longest average work week (in hours). Iowa (#39) has the cheapest office spaces while West Virginia (#45) and Michigan (#15) are tied for highest total spending on incentives as a percentage of GDP.
‘We don’t know what causes any particular business success’

It remains unclear what exactly makes some states thrive better than others. As the map indicates, many states on the West Coast fare better than those on the East Coast when it comes to starting a business. (Overall, U.S. small business optimism surged to an all-time high this month.)

“The reality is we don’t know what causes any particular business success, and many different businesses succeed in a variety of locations for many different reasons,” Drew Hession-Kunz, Professor of the Practice at Boston College, told Yahoo Finance. However, Hession-Kunz noted that “we have to be careful” at looking at only the ranking part of the study. “Every business will have specific advantages, and may thrive in different locations than the usual,” he said. “There are clusters of measures. Not every criterion applies to every business, so we need to drill into the details to see what applies to any particular company.” ‘Finding talented experienced employees is really the bigger challenge’

State taxes and regulatory environment play a major role in whether or not a business succeeds, Hession-Kunz said, as many states at the bottom of the WalletHub rankings have high taxes without the “counterbalancing benefits” that some high-tax states offer.

Four of the five bottom-ranked states overall for starting businesses all have high corporate income tax rates compared to the national average. Texas (#1) doesn’t even have a corporate income tax, while the other top four are all on the lower side.

6 Home Upgrades Under $1,000 That Give You The Most Bang For Your Buck

If you want to increase your profit potential, strategic home improvement upgrades in these six categories — some of which won’t cost you a thing — will give you the biggest return on your investment.

1. A budget-friendly kitchen remodel

Real estate agents will tell you time and again: Kitchens and baths are what sell a home. A dated kitchen can be a big turnoff, and there are lots of ways, both big and small, you can make yours as refreshing and inviting as possible, without investing in a total overhaul. When it comes to spiffing up your kitchen for resale, you don’t need to majorly splurge to make a better impression on buyers.

Instead, bring the space to the point of what’s known as “builder-grade luxury”: Replace basic black appliances with stainless steel, for example, and ditch the laminate countertops in favor of granite. Want an even cheaper way to give your kitchen a quick face-lift? Simply refinish or repaint your cabinetry and add updated hardware (such as new hinges and drawer pulls), which can dramatically transform the look of the room for less than $100. Your best bet is to choose colors and styles that are likely to appeal to the widest range of homebuyers and make them feel as if they’ve walked right into their dream kitchen Pinterest board.

2. Upgrade the bathroom

When it comes to bathrooms, most buyers envision themselves relaxing in a modern, sleek space. The most basic upgrades start with replacing old, pastel, 3-by-3 ceramic tile with modern tile like white subway-style ceramic or 12-by-12 porcelain tiles in a neutral hue. Replacing your plastic tub surround with a tiled shower costs about $1,000 but makes a big difference, and for an extra $100 to $150, you can also add a recessed alcove (a built-in wall niche for your shampoo bottles).

As with a kitchen remodel, consider which changes will have maximum impact. You may not need to replace that old pedestal sink. SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Salt Lake City is among the top 15 best state capitals to live in the United States, according to a recent study conducted by WalletHub.

According to the personal finance website, Salt Lake City was ranked 11th out of the 50 U.S. state capitals in the country, just shy of one spot into the top 10 best capitals to live in.

To determine which state capitals made the best homes, WalletHub compared all 50 capitals across 54 key indicators of affordability, economic wellbeing, quality of education and health, and quality of life, with data set ranges from cost of living to K-12 school-system quality to number of attractions.

Compared to other cities, Salt Lake was in the top 25 for most of the key indicators, and was in the top 15 for quality of education, health and life. However, WalletHub found that Salt Lake has the fourth highest crime rate among the state capitols.
